Client: University of Utah Health Care
Photographer: Chad Kirkland
Our cover story this issue was about how mental health has a measurable impact on physical health. Our concept for imagery centered around the idea that positive mental health manifests itself as a "happy presence," and specific actions you take throughout your day (being active, connecting with loved ones, eating healthy, etc.), bring that presence to life. Throughout the shoot, on location in Salt Lake City and South Jordan, Utah, we were fighting the clock to beat rainstorms that were threatening all day. Amazingly, the sky stayed blue whenever we needed it for a shot. I'm pretty sure our amazing photographer, Chad, has weather super powers, because the moment we packed the gear away, raindrops started hitting the pavement.
One of my favorite compliments I've received from a reader was praise for our cover model's dress and a request for where to purchase it. It's not often that a magazine produced by a hospital ends up dispensing fashion advice.
